Mat Kearney just seems to know what he's doing. As my life becomes exponentially busier by the second, I find it hard to sit down and listen to a full album for sheer appreciation purposes. I get new albums for reviews, but I never seem to always listen to the whole album, and if I do, it is in numerous listening sessions where I can't keep my mind on anything. Fortunately, the nice people over at Columbia Records sent us a copy of Mat Kearney's City of Black & White, and I immediately bumped it in my car. I was able to listen to the whole CD more than one time through, and all in one session. As I expected, Mat did a phenomenal job. He put together an experience, weighting all songs equally, and devoting his heart and soul to every track. The album was golden.

As I was going through the tracks to select my favorites, I found it extremely difficult to pick a few out because they were all really good. Usually artists invest all of their energy into one or two songs, but with Mat, he makes sure to keep himself in check. My favorite track on the album had to be "Annie", followed by "Fire and Rain", "Closer to Love", "Lifeline", "New York to California", in no particular order (actually in numerical order as they appear on the album).

Mat is special because he's an acoustic artist. His music is soft, his voice soothing, and lyrics powerful. It seems as if he transitioned more from his rapping and upbeat days, into a calmer state of euphoria, but his message is not lost. The first time I heard about Mat Kearney was when I saw him open up for John Mayer and Cheryl Crowe a few years ago at Jones Beach. He was hot, new, fresh, and the man. My friends saw him Wednesday night, opening for Keane, and remarked that he was real, down to earth, but more chill. They said he just sounded exactly like he does on his albums. While I enjoy his style, I feel like this album was a little too chill compared to his last album, and he's beginning to fade away as he drops the hip hop funk. It would be terrible to lose Mat at the expense of his awesome music, but it seems like people these days are pushing for Kanye, Shopping Cart Drizzy Drake, Lady Gaga, etc. Don't get me wrong, I grew up on Classic Rock, and alternative rock like Guster and Dispatch, and Mat appeals to me. But to the masses...I don't know what he can do. We need to push him over the edge, and I don't know if he can do that with a soft album like this one.

That being said however, I rate this album a solid A for the overall experience that the album provides. Every track has its own special meaning, and every track has a purpose. I hope that Mat experiences success with this release, and that we see him grow into the future. Man, I love Keane, but what if he opened for Coldplay...what if?

Maybe you guys heard this remix for the first time on the Grammy's, but if you had picked up the Prospekt's March EP additional part of the Viva La Vida album, you would have recognized the brilliance of Jay and Chris before their debut international performance. For Rappers, SoSickWitIt and I enjoy the true musicians, not the fake misogynists that we see these days. We love 2Pac, Biggie, Eminem, Kanye, and of course Jay-Z. In terms of other music, of course we loves Coldplay, I mean who doesn't, they're just so good. It's just sort of a shame to see them as a bandwagon band. But still, they stay tight to their roots, and don't like themselves get carried away. They haven't gotten caught up in the limelight, the limelight finds them, they don't find it. If I were to pick 2 artists to get together to record some tracks, Jay and Coldplay would for sure be on the list. Lost is a phenomenal track by itself, and Jay-Z's producing with his beats, and the addition of a final verse is sensational. Guys, enjoy this one.

Don't believe me, ask Michael
See Martin, see Malcolm
See Biggie, see Pac, see success and its outcome
See Jesus, see Judas
See Caesar, see Brutus, see success is like suicide

P.S. Check out the Viva La Hova mixtape if you want more Coldplay/Jay-Z trax!!!

So mixtapes are truly one of the greatest things in the music industry.  It really allows fans  to get their fix of music for free, and really gives the fans something.  We are going to countdown the best of the best that came out in 08', and while it is somewhat late to still be covering 08', we are going to do it anyway.  Let us know if your favorite mixtape didn't make the top ten, and why it should be there.

  1. Sky High: The Kanye Remix Project, Kanye West - This mixtape featured the type of work Kanye West fans were craving for.  While he did a sort of pop piece on 808's, and decided to sing instead of rap, this free mixtape really gives the fans what they wanted in 08'.
  2. Crash Landed, Charles Hamilton - This young up and coming rapper really showed the world what he can do on this mixtape, and for anyone who does not know Charles should really go ahead and give his mixtape a listen, I promise the up and coming rapper won't disappoint.
  3. Plain Pat & Emile Presents a KiD Named CuDi, KiD CuDi - Wow, it really is a tie for number two and three.  It is hard to say that Charles' mixtape was better than CuDi's and each really brought it hard on their own tapes.  These two really have a lot going for themselves in 09' and both their mixtapes are just samples of how good they will be once their albums drop.  Be sure to check out this mixtape, it was straight fire.
  4. Mick Boogie & Terry Urban Present: Viva La Hova, Coldplay - Well Boogie does it again in 08' with his hit mixtape Viva La Hova.  The mashing and melding that goes down on this mixtape is unreal.  The guy has clear cut talent and is for sure good at what he does.  Viva La Hova was one of the better mixtapes of 08' and was for sure a banger.  Has extreme replay value, unlike other mixtapes out there, and is a for sure pick up if you like Coldplay or Jay-Z.
  5. The Drought Is Over 6 (The Reincarnation), Lil' Wayne - Weezy brought it all out in 08'.  He featured a hit album, a solid group of mixtapes that were bangin' and for sure fan favorites.  This was for sure the Year of the Weezy, and fans have much to look forward from him in the future, considering he drops a butt load of mixtapes each year.
  6. Finally Famous - The Mixtape, Big Sean - Another young rapper put out a solid mixtape this year, and it is for sure something for rap fans to be on the lookout for in the future.  Big Sean landed a record deal with G.O.O.D. music, and this mixtape had some very good tracks on it.  Some say he is a Kanye West poser, but I don't see it.  He has some solid collab tracks on there and it is for sure worth a look at if you enjoy a solid mixtape.
  7. Don Cannon and DJ DRAMA Present The GreenHouse Effect Vol. 1, Asher Roth - Well he joins the other young up and coming rappers in the top ten mixtape releases of 08'.  He is for sure going to make a big splash on the rap scene, and while he has drawn comparisons to the likes of Eminem, he definitely has his own style.  He brings a lot to the rap game and is someone to keep an eye out for in 09', his mixtape is straight fire, so be sure to download it off his site.
  8. Pr33 Ringz, T-Pain - Well his album was a work of art, but the mixtape that came before the album release gave many fans hope that the album would turn out great.  This mixtape features some solid tracks that don't appear on the album and if your a T-Pain fan, it is a must have.  Be sure to pick up a copy of this, it is worth your while.
  9. Mixtape About Nothing, Wale' - It is hard to place Wale's mixtape all the way at #9, considering it was unreal.  Really, it was one of the best mixtapes of 08' but there were so may great ones released that this one falls all the way to the nine spot.  He features some solid tracks and will make a huge splash when his freshman album drops.  Be on the lookout for him in 09', I promise you that he will be one of the top new artists in the game.
  10. Mick Boogie Presents: 1988, Adele - The guy has released two top mixtapes and while his Adele mashup only hits #10 on our list, it is for sure something that people should download.  This mixtape features some good beats and with Adele's already amazing vocals, it is for sure one of the better mixtapes of 2008.  If you liked the Coldplay mixtape, I have a feeling you'll enjoy this one too!
Well that's all of the mixtapes in the top ten.  They are all awesome and it was very hard to rank which was better than which.  Be sure to grab the mixtapes and give them a listen, and leave a comment if you liked it.  Also, be sure to be on the lookout for the young up and coming rappers, I know that 09' is going to be a huge year, but don't tell me I didn't tell you so.

Well there always seem to be these claims and accusations about artists using other artists lyrics or beats, or even large parts of songs for their own tracks.  Recently, famous guitarist Satriani has accused and is seeking a jury trial lawsuit against the UK band Coldplay, stating that, "substantial original portions" of his instrumental song, "Is There Love In Space?" featured in CP's ever-so-popular track off of Viva la Vida.  The album titled track does sound  bit similar to the instrumental song, but I am not truly convinced that they took the music off Satriani's song.  However, there is underlying similarities between the two songs, although I do not see this "substantial" amount... as his song runs for about six minutes and roughly thirty-nine seconds.  That would constitute Coldplay using more than half (in my opinion, I don't know how much legally) of his track for their hit single, "Viva la Vida," which runs for a total of four minutes and four seconds. This being said, at least three minutes of the song would have to be taken from Satriani's track in order for it (in my mind) to constitute as there being a "substantial" amount of his track used.  Once again, Coldplay has not been convicted or proven guilty in jacking this 52 year old's six minute instrumental track.

On top of that, Coldplay has also been accused of copying Creaky Boards track entitled, "Songs I Didn't Write."  Funny that that is the track, assuming that Coldplay may have in fact copied it!  Anyway, this song is a bit more closer to Coldplay's track than to Satriani's track.  In fact, if this is the case, who should be suing who!?  Considering that all three tracks sound so similar, it is hard for me to believe that Coldplay was the first person to hijack the chord cadence and flow of whoever had this track first.  Creaky Boards came about in 2004, and Coldplay put their track out in 2008.  Satriani is 52... and his song, "Is There Love In Space?" came out in in 2004 as well.  The Creaky Boards track was released on their second album, which was released in 2008.  So Satriani, if his claims to the songs are correct, should be charging both Coldplay and Creaky Boards.  So here are the possible scenario's for the current situation:
  1. Coldplay Did Not Copy Satriani, Creaky Boards Did
  2. Coldplay Copied Satriani, Creaky Boards Did Not
  3. Coldplay Copied Satriani, Creaky Boards Copied Coldplay
  4. Coldplay Copied Bits Of Satriani, Creaky Boards Copied Coldplay
Those are the top four ideas I have going right now...  I am truly surprised that Satriani is trying to pull this off considering they are up for the second most Grammy nominations.  Just behind Lil' Wayne, Coldplay has 7 nominations, and some do include their hit single, "Viva la Vida."  Satriani is going up against a popular rock band that has accomplished a ton in their already illustrious musical career.  Even if Satriani wins the lawsuit, he will be making some money, but his track will not gain anymore popularity.  I don't know if he is doing it to just throw himself back in the spotlight, or maybe he is doing it for the money.  Fact of the matter is that whether or not Coldplay stole a "substantial" amount or not, I don't think there is enough evidence for his "substantial" claim to be valid and worth making a case for.  Anyway, we will cover more news as this progresses, check back here in the coming weeks to find out if Coldplay will have to dish the rights to "Viva la Vida" to Satriani, or will this 52 year old guitarist just look like a fool for trying to shoot down one of the most popular bands that has come out of the UK?  Be the judge for yourself, and check out Satriani's song below, and then compare it to Coldplay's track.  What do ya think?

Satriani - Is There Love In Space?

Coldplay - Viva la Vida

Creaky Boards - Songs I Didn't Write

Remember back in 2005 Jay-Z's album, "Kingdom Come"? Well the last track on that album featured Chris Martin. Now, the two are working together on a remix to the song, "Lost?" off of Coldplay's most recent album! Should be an interesting and awesome team up, although I don't really know how it will sound with Jay-Z!

Well, the first single off Viva La Vida is for sure a great song.  It's got everything going for it, and really complements what Coldplay does in a very nice manner.  The single itself is soothing to the senses, and is definitely going to be up there on the single charts.  A while back, there was a one week promotional of free downloads of the single off the Coldplay homepage.  I had not known this, and missed out on a great opportunity.  However, if you missed this promo, today, May 7th, 2008, if you pick up a copy of N.W.E. UK Magazine, they are including a promo CD for the album.  So be sure to check that out.

For those of you out there who did not get the magazine, or download the track off the site, you can listen to it off of YouTube, and let us know what you think of it!  The single is just overall a hit in my opinion.  There is not a single complaint I have about the track, and if this is how the rest of the album is going to sound, then we are all in for a big treat.  Unlike Lil' Wayne, and his inability to put out a solid single, "Violet Hill" is a masterpiece.  And talking about masterpieces, from what I understand, the album is named after a painting by a French artist, if I recall correctly.  I will be sure to give you all the low down on the album later this week, and give you guys more information as to the status and progression of the album.  For now, just check out the single provided on this post, and let us know what you think of it!  I am sure you will be very satisfied with this track, I know I sure am!

So as we reported earlier, Coldplay is almost done recording and mixing their fourth studio album.  The new album will be titled, Viva la Vida, but there is still a chance in which the albums title would be named, Death and All His Friends.  The album has had a confirmed track list, which will feature ten tracks.

Just like we had posted earlier, there will be several tracks in which will not be featured on the album, but rather will be released before the June 16th release.  So why put out an E.P. of a ton of singles instead of just putting out two different L.P.'s?  I ask myself that question, and something just clicked in my head.  Since they can't decide over which title they want to use for the album, they should just put out two albums, one with the confirmed track listing, and the other with the tracks which will not be featured on the album.  They could make it a two disc set, one disc being Viva la Vida and the other being Death and All His Friends.  What do you guys think of this idea?  I hope they change their mind, and decide to do what I suggest!  So there has been one for sure thing besides the track listing, and that is the album will not be titled, Prospekt, but rather one of the two names suggested above and in the title of the post.

Confirmed Track Listing:
"Life in Technicolor"
"Cemeteries of London"
"Lost!"
"42"
"Lovers in Japan/Reign of Love"
"Yes"
"Viva la Vida"
"Violet Hill"
"Strawberry Swing"
"Death and All His Friends"

Singles To Be Released Before The Album Is Released:
"Leftrightleftright"
"Poppy Fields"
"Prospekt's March"
"Famous Old Painters"
"Glass of Water"
"Rainy Day"
"Song for the Escapist"
"Chinese Sleep Chant"

I am sure that most of you are familiar with the ever so popular X&Y album cover from Coldplay's last release.  Well above is what the album art would look like if it said, "Coldplay News."  I found a site in which it allows you to type in text, and it produces the form in which Coldplay had used to create their album art for the 2006 album release.  That, is besides the point (but if you want to check it out, Click Here!)

So, Coldplay's fourth studio release is not going to be like all their past releases.  This one will be much shorter (it is said to be only 42 minutes long).  Also, there will only be nine total tracks.  The list in which these tracks will be chosen from can be seen in this post.  The release date for the album has yet to be confirmed, but from what we know of it could possibly be released May 19th, 2008.  More than likely, it will be released in May or June of 08'

While the album may only feature nine songs, there have been news and speculations that in addition to the nine featured songs on the album, that there would be two separate single releases (of tracks that are not on the album.)  Below are the tracks in which Coldplay will choose from (for their nine track release).

Tracks to Choose From:
"Famous Old Painters"
"Glass of Water"
"Lost!"
"Cemeteries of London"
"Violet Hill"
"Poppy Fields"
"42"
"Yes!"
"Leftrightleftrightleft"
"Rainy Day"
"Prospekt's March"
"Strawberry Swing"
"Lovers in Japan"

(Remember, Only Nine Of These Tracks Will Make It On The Album)

As I promised before, I would keep you all updated on the Coldplay album which should hopefully be coming out this year!  As you all know, Coldplay took a short break while on their South American tour.  During this time, they had recorded and produced tons of music in these latin countries, and from what we have understood, the album may have a bit of a hispanic sound to it (for whatever that means...)  I really cannot wait for this album! I am a big Coldplay fan, and I expect this album to be off the rockers!  Timbaland has confirmed that he has done some collaboration work with Coldplay for their upcoming 4th Studio Album Release.  More news to come when we hear it!

This week's remix of the week is a sicknasty dance club remix of Coldplay's "Clocks". I was looking around for remixes and you know I love dance remixes b/c everyone loves dance parties, and I found this baby. I was really impressed by the mixing of this remix, and I think David X, whoever he is, is a genius. Enjoy guys, I'm gonna be listening to this one for a while.

A stream will be coming shortly, but for now here is your rapidshare download link:

As you all may or may not know, Coldplay has announced that they will be making a new album in 2008. They have not released any news on the album at all, which makes fans want to know even more about it!!! Besides the fact that it will be released in 2008, there have been rumors claiming that the name for this album could possibly be called "Prospekt." Now I'm not saying that this is the actual name and I still do not know if that name is 100% correct, but thats whats been circulating around the web for a little bit. If Coldplay is a band that you have never heard of, well then I must ask you the question, do you live under a rock? Coldplay has been one of the more sensational bands to come out of the London, England area. Every single one of their albums that has been out in the U.S. has been at #1 on the charts. Their latest album, "X&Y," was probably their most popular album, landing the #1 spot in the UK, U.S., Italy, France, Australia, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Nederland, and Austria. Their first album, which debuted in 2000 sold 8.5 million units. Their second album followed up 12 million units. Their third album saw a 2 million unit decrease, putting up 10 million units. I am personally excited for their upcoming release which is rumored to be coming out 2008. WHen more news surfaces, I will make sure to blog it!
